structures sonores #2: Auton - "Any Where Out Of The World" CD album. Available now.
This trio has amazed me ever since I first heard their music back in 2004, when Douglas Holmquist sent me three songs that he had recorded with his friends Rikard Heberling and Petter Samuelsson. The music that I later came to know as Auton meant a departure from the synthesizer driven energetic pop that Douglas and Rikard had a hand in creating as part of their previous band, Dr. Higgins, but although Auton was much more contemplative both groups shared the same strong sense of melody and clever arrangements.
"Any where out of the world" is a document of what could be accomplished in the early days of the 21st century in a small country up north.

V. Sjöberg New Jazz Ensemble - "Do Nothing 'Til You Hear From Me" CD album (iDEAL Recordings). Available now.
"Words are kind of tricky. This might actually be one of the instances where words are redundant, but I'm on a train right now and the activities available are somewhat limited.
So, here goes;
Jazz.
By letting people know that you are not part of a something, for instance a "musical movement", you are automatically letting yourself be controlled by the thing that you claim to have no connection to. In other words, a negated reference is still very much a reference and one should be aware of the fact that by making a statement such as "this is not one of those tired testosterone-fuelled free jazz records" you are inviting the connection between your work and the very thing that you are trying to avoid. Perhaps even more importantly, you are letting yourself be defined by what you're not. This all sounds quite serious. I could follow this up by writing that "this is not a manifesto", but by now we all know that saying that would kind of turn it into one. Yeah.
Digging myself deeper; in a conversation that I once had with Douglas Holmquist, one of the members of the Viktor Sjöberg New Jazz Ensemble, he reflected on the fact that "free jazz" in the Ornette Coleman-sense was sort of followed by an implicit exclamation mark and that this exclamation mark seem to have evaporated as the phrase went from being a call to arms into being a description of something formulaic and institutionalized. The reasons behind forming this group, the Victor Sjöberg New Jazz Ensemble, and calling it a New Jazz Ensemble isn't really about something as catchphrase-friendly as "bringing that exclamation mark back!" (oh, see...I did it again). It is just a humble comment on the sad fact that a lot of the time the word jazz is very limiting, both in the mind of the consumer and from the point of view of the musician/producer. That is not cool.
The album that we have recorded is called "Do nothing 'til you hear from me" and it contains five variations on one musical theme. It is a jazz album and I hope that you will enjoy it."
V. Sjöberg - "On a winter's day"
Cd album
Kalligrammofon recordings - Kalligrammofon #1
Viktor Sjöberg has been working in various fields of music over the past years. He started to compose music around 1995 and, using his own words, this music "was built around a naïve idea of what hip hop could be. More often than not, it failed, with the end result not even remotely resembling hip hop. This was the starting point. As time went by, actual hip hop was produced and therefore producing "real hip hop" soon became boring and predictable. New ideas came into play and I began developing my sample based music, my firm belief being that "hip hop is the ultimate free form music"".
Today the musical expressions of Viktor Sjöberg are diverse but consistent. His soundscapes are unambiguously urban. His use of rough, often unprocessed field recordings as well as his sampling of phonograph records, creates a musical output which is as aware as it is attentive.
On a winter's day is with no doubt about motion. It is in many ways an album that captures the relations and dynamics between the sometimes dramatic development of everyday life and the constant changes in nature. I find that its fragile yet shimmering atmosphere describes an ambivalence, moving between feelings of reverence and an anxiety that is caused by a lack of control.
Viktor himself describes the album like this:
""On a winter's day" is based around a musical theme which was constructed by stealing the opening chords of a very famous pop song. These few chords provided a sketchy foundation which was approached and abandoned in several ways. "On a winter's day" revolves around the sound of the acoustic guitar. The acoustic guitar is the number one instrument used when musicians try to create the illusion of intimacy and authenticity, and the decision to reflect a very personal experience through acoustic guitar is a playful way of criticizing as well as acknowledging that myth. "On a winter's day" tells a story of love. The setting is Gothenburg, Sweden."

Viktor Sjöberg - "Audio Architecture" Cd album. dD records, 2000.
The label info, from 1999 sometime:
He's called Viktor Sjöberg and he's living in the quiet Swedish community of Pixbo. He's young and he's sampling everything that sounds and even some things that don't...
He got into musicmaking by sampling things such as plastic bags and rubbing a little microphone against the speakers. This lead to a rave review in a local newspaper and strange looks from the other kids at summercamp.
After this he really got going, beatmining, digging for music everywhere he could, absorbing all kinds of influences and constantly developing, constructing and re-constructing his own musical ideas into what they are now.
His inspirations range from hip hop producer Peanut Butter Wolf to film maker David Lynch and author Jack Kerouac via the legendary Lee 'Scratch' Perry.
His music is moody, mainly because it's based on introspection and emotion, on the mysteries that are buried deep inside us. It's beat-orientated though, but minimalistic, beats and melodies both stripped to the bone. Sometimes it is like listening to movie soundtracks for which the movie still has to be made - but who knows what tricks he has up his sleeve ?

Viktor Sjöberg - "...imagines a house" (Friendly Noise) Three inch CD.
Just a hundred copies were made for a celebratory Friendly Noise night and I found a few a little while ago.
This record is documenting the live interpretations of the Testbild! album “Imagine a house” that I performed around Sweden to mark the release of that album. These performances took place in Stockholm and Malmö in the early days of the summer of 2006. This disc contains altered versions of two songs that were performed on these occasions. They were recorded live in the Sonores studio space and edited in Chinatown. October 2006.

"Gothenburg 08" (Fang Bomb) Compilation CD.
The by now legendary compilation LP 'Gothenburg 84' was released by Radium 226.05 (record label/gallery/publishing house/breeding ground) in 1984. The LP is an excellent document of an unusually creative period in the musical history of Gothenburg, featuring the upcoming talent of that time. It has an impressive roster of artists, such as CM von Hausswolff, Freddie Wadling, Zbigniew Karkowski and Jean-Louis Huhta.
Now, in 2008, Gothenburg's electronic and experimental scene is again soaring with talent. It's a scene of pioneers creating exploratory, unique music - completely new, but still connected to the spirit from almost 25 years ago. It is another unique era, and it is time to document it. This is what 'Gothenburg 08' sets out to do.
'Gothenburg 08' includes never before heard tracks by The Skull Defekts, Porn Sword Tobacco, Anders Dahl, Jasper TX, Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words, Joel Brindefalk, Viktor Sjöberg & Jonas Lindgren, Tsukimono and Sewer Election.

Stilllysm (Stilll) Compilation CD.
The Brussels-based Stilll label's first compilation, "Stilllysm", confirms a commitment to the best in organic electronic post-pop music with melancholic tinge. The compilation includes music from established artists such as Mitchell Akiyama, Aoki Takamasa, aMute, Ghislain Poirier, Peter Principle, Off the Sky, Christophe Bailleau, Benjamin Lew... as well as newer names, including the post-jazz duo Tangtype, the sonic destructured post-rock of Mikale de Graff, the extremely talented Holiday for Strings (who will soon release their official debut album as a co-production between Stilll and the Canadian label Intr-Version) and many other excellent surprises such as Immune and Nox, both future full releases from Stilll. Sometimes melodic and dynamic, other times vast, contemplative and ambient, "Stilllysm" is a cohesive and powerful record that will have listeners in anticipation of the great things to come from this new label.
